Why when people see animals - a good example is the cat - do we make a kissy noise at the animal to try and attract it?
We have a stray cat that has taken to sleeping in the greenhouse. I was walking to work this morning and I saw it. I made the kissy noise. It ignored me. I don't especially care for cats, I'm a dog person, but I'm not mean to them. I acknowledge them.
I made the noise and then thought "What the fuck, Beth? Why did you do that? Cats don't make that noise themselves, why would a cat respond to you making it?"
Answers on a postcard please...

Perhaps the cat could tell that you weren't really a cat person and that's why it ignored you. However, sometimes cats are just rude and unless they want something then they will ignore you :).

I dont make kissy noises. I look for a good-sized rock.

Try hissing and stomping your feet. That always works for me. I'm not quite as hard core as Dave. But I can understand his sentiments.

I know what you mean! I do it too. Random.

Funny. I've done that too. I call most dogs I meet, "Baby." I annoy myself sometimes.

I'm not really a cat person at all, so when I see one, I talk to it like I'm a gangsta. Usually something like 'hey cat? Whaddya lookin' at?'. I do this because I think it will turn the cat off and it won't want to be around me. This never works. I suspect it has less to do with the gangsta talk and more to do with the fact that cats (like guys) will only come over to you when you don't want them to. Just a hunch.
