Last year, I was really excited at the prospect of a new year. 2009 was going to be my year, I thought.
I think a lot of people thought that and for everyone I know, it really really wasn't.
2010 has brought a fresh start and a different attitude. I can't expect the entire year to be perfect. Perfection is a myth. Doesn't exist. And if it did, where would the fun be? You'd have nothing to strive for. Nowhere to improve.
I made some shallow beauty resolutions for 2010, but as for life resolutions I only stumbled across mine while I was thinking about what I should blog.
I had initially thought about posting how brilliant my 2010 has been so far. How well things are going at work, how much fun I had shopping on my birthday, how yummy the kangaroo I had for my birthday lunch was, how I've lived off of M&S birthday cake this week and how much I'm loving watching my way through all available series of Entourage.
I was going to say how well it had all started and how I hoped it would continue. I do, but its not a realistic thought.
Its unrealistic of me to expect this level of awesomeness to continue all year. Which lead me to my resolution:
Take each day as it comes. Live it and then move onto the next. Don't worry about the future or rehash the past. They're both either gone and can't be changed or not here yet. Either way, I can't control them. Why waste precious time and energy trying?
I have been known to get upset and fraught over things that ultimately, cannot be changed and do not matter. I'm not going to do that anymore. I'm also going to try and stop having episodes because other people are retards. Yes, there are too many. Yes, they interrupt the flow of my day and generally fuck things up that I really don't need fucked up, but I can't control them. All I can hope is that they reach their full potential quickly (a chav baby and a council flat) and that they get the fuck out of my way.
I just thought I'd share that with you all. Now I'm going to go and have some more birthday cake.
Probably with some of the brandy ice cream we got at christmas. Real brandy by the way, none of this brandy flavour nonsense.
I'll probably watch another episode of Entourage too...just for good measure.
And yeah, you're right. I did steal the title of this post from a Wayne's World quote.

I think your level of awesomeness is off the charts. Cake and brandy ice cream well into January 2010. A great start! x

Ellie - Thank you my dear, you're pretty damned awesome yourself. x

I love where you talked about fucked up people fucking things up for you. That just made me laugh!
I agree with you all the way. My 2010 is not going well, my ex is taking me BACK to court again and I'm BACK in high debt again. Same thing last year. I don't ever feel I'll get ahead financially enough to move out of this house. Sigh...but who knows what will happen in the next 11 months. Good luck to you, Beth.

Dena - I'm sorry to hear that, and I know you'll probably want to slap me for saying it but try to stay positive. I read somewhere recently that you can't tell whats going to happen in the future so you can either imagine it'll be good or imagine it'll be bad. You don't know for sure either way, so you may as well think it'll be good. I'm thinking good thoughts for you, try to keep your chin up! x

Sounds like a good plan and brandy cream is both the future and the past.
WORD!

DHG - Amen sir. I'm giving serious consideration to introducing more alcohol infused dairy products into my life throughout the year.

Indeed. My own little mantra is 'there is fun going forward'.
The Now is good.
Pass the brandy ice cream...

I'm in complete agreement with you honey 2009 sucked big time and hopefully, 2010 will be much better. Though frankly, that won't take much to improve things round here.
Your resolutions sound like a recipe for sanity to me, I may just filch them for my own nefarious purposes. Bwhahahaha...
(ok, not enough cake and wine yet....)

I suppose that I'm one of the lucky ones who didn't have a bad 2009. Oh well. Average year and actually better than 2008. By the way, I find this "Carpe Diem" thing completely outdated.
I would rather be on the lookout instead of forgetting past and future.
Hope the cake was good though.

Rashbre - I like that. I may steal that and use it myself. Remarkably, there is still brandy ice cream left. I've done well I think.
Roses - Help yourself, its hardly new wisdom on my part so I couldn't be precious about it!
Gany - I've never really done "Carpe Diem" before, so I'm happy to give it a shot. The cake was fabulous, there are few easily accessible sweet treats as good as an M&S chocolate birthday cake. I often thing about buying one when its not my birthday but the thought of "what if I buy one and someone who really has a birthday tries to get it and they can't because I took one out of circulation" always stops me.

I always think going away is a nice start to the year. At first its terrifying to loose so many holiday days in January, but it really helps get the thoughts for the year ahead in order.
Here's to 2010, and good luck!

John - Same to you!
I'm a holiday hoarder. This year I took a day off for my birthday but I'll wait until May/June before I take any more leave. I usually work it so that I have a week in May, a week in August and then a week in Oct/Nov/Dec. Makes the end of the year nice and easy.

One word:
BAILEYS
Posted by: Daniel Hoffmann-Gill | Sunday, January 24, 2010 at 02:27 PM
DHG - That is an EXTREMELY good call. I'm reminded of a pub nearby that does a good Baileys Latte, lovely for after dinner.
I'm a fan of the starbucks hazelnut hot chocolate. Can I merge the two... hot chocolate, hazlenut AND Baileys?
I fear it may be too good.
